Do you allow your kids to watch television?How long do they watch?Miss D's pediatrician suggested no TV until 2 years.I have been letting her watch some TV during early afternoon,and sometimes while eating her lunch.I get 'escape time' while see watches,which is a big help when I have to do other work around the house.But I dont feel good most of the times when I let her watch TV.It is one of the biggest addictions for the kids at a young age.Thankfully she loves to look at books and be read to,so we read her a lot of books.She also plays on her own with her toys,for sometime in the mornings and evenings.
She used to watch only when I turn on her channel,now,she takes the remote and hands it to one of us and kinda starts whining,for us to turn on her channel.Soon,she will start asking verbally to do it and before we realize she will figure out how to do it all by herself ! I am sure we will try all the tactics,like 'No TV,until you eat your food,no TV until you finish your work,no TV until I tell you to watch'.But the question is,how much should we restrict them from an early age,the age where they still can not understand if we tell them 'No TV'.......
The toddler shows that come on TV are educative and informative,so in one way it is a learning tool.Miss D loves 'Blues Clues' ,her other favorite is 'Dora The Explorer'.She has a selective liking even among those cartoon shows,the other shows dont hold her interest for too long.
We,as parents try to balance their lives in the best way that we can....but always wonder what is right and what is wrong....more so with the first child(I assume).

I take the easy way out. No TV. Just Videos, that I have already prescreened. Like Barney and not for more than 20 mins a day. I really believe that TV is a no-no for kids under two.
It stunts their imagination, it teaches them instant gratification, and they pick up things that we might not want them to pick up. Even from the educative ones. My niece who watches TV, used cuss words once from a TV program.
See the deal is, you have to sit with them while they watch it, so you can censor, but for us, we use it as a babysitter (I do too, when I'm too harassed) and so we can't censor appropriately.
So that's my take, No TV. Let's see how long I last :)
Great issue for this blog/forum...I usually try to limit TV in our house too, but its not an easy thing to do..not that the kids ask for it or anything...at the end of the day after you get home from work and have done the kitchen work and the cleaning etc, I feel like watching something to unwind..A1 rarely watches any TV even when its on, he probably watches some hindi movie/ cartoon for about an hour in a week..he usually wants to play or write (his latest craze)..A2 on the other hand, will sit back and watch if we are watching..and I try to limit that.. he's usually roaming the kitchen or we play outside in the evenings or go for walks....Although some cartoons on weekends are good, he rarely sits at one place to see anything..
So my point is in moderation, TV can also be stimulative/ engaging.
Poppins:I understand that the content of the program is very important,I am talking about only cartoons/kids shows,which we know what the content is.I agree that its too soon for her to be watching any TV,other than some nursery songs video may be.But its being too hard to resist the temptation of letting her watch for 20-30 mins,while I am cooking(thats the only time I do it.Will try some other method and see how it goes.
While we are seeing other programs,she does not watch...she's around doing her own thing.

Now, I'm a big believer of no TV etc. But I let her watch 20 mins of TV at 1yrs just to keep my sanity intact and I think it's better for the child to keep your sanity intact. Now, Gudiya watches about 1 1/2 hours of TV a day and I monitor the content like a hawk. I'm very strict about what she watches and how much.
